The Importance of Choosing Food Safe Plastics

The Importance of Choosing Food Safe Plastics

Why It Is Important to Use Food-Safe Plastics for Kids?

When it comes to choosing items like lunchboxes, snack boxes, plates, cups, or food storage containers for kids, one critical factor to consider is the type of plastic used.

The latest trend in Snackle Boxes is a great example to demonstrate this.

You only need to google "Snackle Box" and you will most likely be served up loads of images of aesthetically pleasing plastic boxes full of snacks.

BUT, you need to consider that not all plastics are created equal.

And some may pose risks to children’s health if they come into contact with food or beverages.

So using cheap plastic compartment trays that were not created especially for food are not a great idea!

Here’s why using food-safe plastics is essential for kids’ safety and well-being:

1. Preventing Chemical Leaching

Certain plastics contain harmful chemicals, such as BPA (Bisphenol A), phthalates, and heavy metals, which can leach into food or drinks, especially when exposed to heat or acidic foods. These chemicals have been linked to various health concerns. Using food-safe plastics ensures that the materials have been tested and certified to prevent chemical leaching, offering peace of mind to parents.

2. Protecting Developing Bodies

Children’s bodies are still developing, making them more vulnerable to the effects of toxins. Even small amounts of harmful substances can have a greater impact on kids than adults. Choosing plastics that are certified as food-safe helps minimise exposure to these potential dangers, supporting healthy growth and development.

3. Complying with Safety Standards

Food-safe plastics are regulated by various organisations. These certifications ensure that the plastic materials meet stringent safety guidelines. By opting for certified food-safe plastics, parents can trust that these products have undergone rigorous testing to ensure they are safe for everyday use.

4. Durability and Resistance

Food-safe plastics are often designed to be more durable and resistant to damage. They are less likely to degrade or release harmful substances over time, even after repeated use, washing, or exposure to different temperatures. This makes them a reliable choice for long-term use with children.

5. Reducing Environmental Impact

Many food-safe plastics are recyclable and designed with sustainability in mind. By choosing eco-friendly, food-safe options, parents not only protect their children’s health but also contribute to reducing environmental waste.

6. Minimising Allergic Reactions

Non-food-safe plastics may contain dyes, coatings, or additives that can cause allergic reactions or skin sensitivities in children. Food-safe plastics are free from these irritants, making them a safer choice for kids who may have allergies or sensitive skin.

How to Identify Food-Safe Plastics

To ensure the plastics you’re using are safe for children:

  • Look for labels like “BPA-free” OR “phthalate-free"

  • Choose trusted brands that specifically state their products are food-safe.

Using food-safe plastics for kids is not just a matter of convenience—it’s a critical step in protecting their health and development.

By making informed choices and prioritising safety, you can ensure that mealtimes are both enjoyable and worry-free!

When in doubt, always opt for certified, high-quality products designed with children’s well-being in mind.
